Townsville is Australia's largest tropical city and is made up of the Twin Cities of Thuringowa and Townsville. Close by are some of the best known tourist destinations in Australia - the Great Barrier Reef, World Heritage-listed rainforests, tropical island resorts and only a short ferry ride away, Magnetic Island.

The major Defence establishments in Townsville are Lavarack Barracks, home to the 3rd Brigade, RAAF Base Townsville and Ross Island.
